This is a step by step how to tutorial on needle felting a fairy. Learn new techniques and trips for needle felting right now.

This is a slightly different tutorial then the others I have posted. You will need a hand carding tool(see video) for this one. This helps work and separate the roving. Also, to cover areas quicker we will use a Clover Art multiple needle tool which makes the work faster.

First thing to do is to select a wide variety of roving colors. You will need colors for hair skin and clothing. Be creative!

Since we are just making a 2d fairy, you can lay out your roving in the desired shape than use the needle punch to tighten the design. Keep doing this and shaping. For more intricate details use a single needle. Connect the different colors with a single needle.

How To Needle Felt Doll Feet

Needle Felting Dolls provides an art all its own with a unique look. The hardest parts to needle felt include the face, hands and feet. In this tutorial, learn how to needle felt feet. What you will need is the usual: a styrofoam pad for sticking, wool roving and needles of course.

Sometimes it is good to draw a pattern for the feet size. This will help in the packing of the roving to the right side.

Take the roving and push the wool into a rough shape of the bottom of the foot. Don't include the toes, just the foot pad. The toes will be done later.

Start at the bottom of the foot and felt it tight slowly working up adding or subtracting roving as needed.

Finally, make the toes separately and felt them to the toes afterwards.

Needle felting is a skill and art. It takes both an artistic view point and hard work. Below I have compiled some of the best techniques and best practices while performing this skill to help you get the most out of your needle felting hobby.

First, decide how hard packed you want the roving. Leaving it loose gives it a puffy look, but makes it more susceptable to remove itself or get damaged. A hard packed roving looks tighter, more professional and lasts longer.

Second, Remember to use a soft base such as styrofoam underneath your work. Your roving will pack tighter and your needles will last longer.

Third, Take care of your equipment.

All you need is green and orange wool roving, some styrofoam and your needles. Believe it or not you can make very realistic looking pumpkins with little work. Using the simple techniques displayed in this video you will learn how to needle felt a pumpkin. The good concept to grasp in this video is start with an inside cheaper white wool, make your shape and punch it a few times, and then build up your shape through layers. How To Needle Felt a Purse On A Flat Base

This how to tutorial will show you how to needle felt your own felt designs on your purse, and it also shows the basics of using a flat base to help. This video is thanks to MakeItMineMag.com, a great craft resource that I recommend visiting for help. First you need tools of course. I recommend some styrofoam, any will do, even junk styrofoam. This will absorb the needle punches. Than you will need your felting needles and the different colored wool roving. Fit the styrofoam into the purse and then put the wool into the design you desire. Then start punching with your needle. Make sure that you punch deep enough so that your needles make the fibers intertwine and will stay. Do this until the design is tight and ready to go! That's it, and oh yeah, have fun.

Needle Felting Machine Versus Hand Made Needle Felting

We test a Janome needle felting machine versus using your hands. How does technology stack up against the original stitcher. Read on to find out.

Now, we have been hand felters for many years, so we may seem biased to using your hands, but we've put that aside as we did this review of a Janome sewing machine. We've found that just because you've done it for a long time, doesn't necessarily mean its the best way.

After testing out the machine for several months we have come to the conclusion that one works best for certain situations, and neither the machine or hand needles is necessarily better than the other. If you can afford both, we highly recommend it as you will save your fingers a lot of pain(unless you've built up some tough callouses), and both methods compliment each other and will improve your skills to a new level.

Here's what we recommend the felting machine for:

When your fingers are tired, you have a long project or deadlines, etc. You will work faster with the felting machine
More intricate details, and for any flat projects
When speed matters
Production - say your an artist and reproduce a certain amount of the same piece, it makes more sense to create the product faster after you have hand made the first one

Here's our recommendation for good ol' hand needle felting:

Meditation - for many needle felting is relaxing, and its not about speed. Its about enjoying the craft and taking it easy. Especially if you are a detail freak. Personally, I love to work on my piece and every little while just observe the piece and how it is shaping and think about how I can improve upon it.
Detail - The machine can get tighter felt patterns, but nothing can beat the quality of the hand made product
3d sculpture - A machine just can't handle certain designs and sizes.
Large projects - see above

In conclusion, if you can afford it we recommend both, otherwise stick to your hands!

How To Needle Felt Basic Shapes

One of the skills to master in needle felting is the art of shapes. In this how to tutorial you will learn the easiest way to make needle felted shapes. What people don't realize is that there is prep work before you even pick up the needles and start punching. Making the shape is a matter of rolling your wool and holding with your thumbs. The key is the thumbs. You have to push it hard with your hands, and make sure you don't capture any air. Basically here is the process:

Visualize your shape
Roll wool over thumb and hold
Push Out Airpockets
Repeat on other part of wool

This may seem redundant, but it will save you a lot of time that you don't have to use the needle for. Video courtesy Felt Alive

Needle Felting for the beginner can be overwhelming. Needle Felting Wool Fleece And Tools For Beginners

This is the best video online I have found for the beginner of needle felting that introduces all the different types of wool fleece including roving, large roving, dyed wool versus untampered wool, and all the tools you will need to get started with your needle felted projects. The quality is lacking and the voice has a weird echo, but if you can get passed that, I feel this is a top notch video for the beginner. It is only 6 minutes long, but it is packed full of all the info you need on the tools needed for needle felting. Once you have the tools you need you can move on to the different basics such as technique and different areas of felting.
